Marcus first met the founders of Belift, our Java based supplier of this coffee, while they were selling roasted coffee in The Bay Area. He met the team, tasted the coffee, and immediately encouraged them to start exporting green coffee to buyers in the US. Marcus advised the team, and they quickly found a market in the US for these exceptional coffees.
Initially a specialty coffee shop in Indonesia with a US sales channel quickly became Belift Green Beans. After noticing the absence of specialty coffee showcased from Indonesia, Ivan Hartanto, and brothers Kevin and Kenny Soewondo made it their mission to fix that problem.
Belift has succeeded in finding the best farmers in Java Indonesia who are also willing to embrace and commit to changes. The ultimate goal is to grow 90+ point microlot coffees. All successes and shortcomings are logged to learn from every experience.
Education is a key focus of Belift. Through the sales of coffee they have built a school, which provides free education. Traditionally many farmers end their formal education after elementary school in order to start working.
In addition 20% of revenue is given to social non-profit organizations. To incentivise the quality of the cherry, a premium is paid for ripe cherries and not for unripe cherries.
